I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in.
― George S. McGovern

War is the greatest evil Satan has invented to corrupt our hearts and souls. We should honor our soldiers, but we should never honor war.
― Dean Hughes, Far From Home

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day to remember our soldiers living in dead, combat served and peacetime served.

My family has several who served, My dad who was drafted, my grandfather who earned his citizenship in WWI, an uncle who went to Korea, and several cousins who never saw war but served. In their honor I will always remember.

Today was offering a free search on military records for memorial day so I looked up some of my deceased relatives. Including and uncle I never met.
His name was George L. Volk, he was an uncle on my mom's side. The reason I never met him is because he went to war in 1945 and never came back. He was only 23, and he was a Sargent in the Army 382nd Infantry Company B.

My son is just a month shy of 21, as a mother I can't imagine the horror and pain of losing any child, much less such a young person with their whole life ahead of them, and not even having a body to bury. The thought of my son in combat alone is more than my brain can handle.

He was the third of 13 kids, my mom was 10 years younger, the 11th child, meaning she was only 13.

The grave marker is in the cemetery with my grandparents, long since forgotten and not visited as his siblings are elderly and none of the nieces or nephews ever met him, we are also scattered hither and yon, none of us close by.

Today he will be remembered, one of many who died for his country in a war that should never be forgotten, serving a country that should be grateful, but hasn't yet learned how to live in peace.

In every neighborhood there is at least one house that all the neighbors gossip about. This is a diary from the woman who lives in that house. I am a single mother in her mid thirties. I live in North Dakota with my son, Warren.

I tend to be a bit of a slob, and am the opposite of a girly-girl. I am geek girl, who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Buffy, Angel, action movies, science fiction, action adventure, Dr. Who, and so on and so on.

I love to write and while I don't post much fiction online anymore I would love to be a writer someday. I am also overweight, bipolar and suffer from allergy induced asthma.
