What in the world is up with some parents these days? I was reading one of my favorite local columnists, on Sunday, and I found my self flabbergasted. I've heard of being overprotective, and Maker knows my parents were more than a little protective at times, but going on a job interview with your kid and negotiating for them? What are they trying to do, make sure little Bobby Sue is still living at home when she's 35, because the world is a big scary place when mommy can't make the big bad boss stop hurting her widdle feelings.

My parents weren't perfect and probably did more than they should have for me, when I was ready to do it on my own, but even they would have never taken it that far, and I would have been beyond mortified if they had. Growing up on a farm, we had a strange mixture of overprotectiveness and neglect rolled into one. I wasn't allowed to walk the 5 blocks from school to CCD (Catholic Sunday school, on Wednesdays), or go into a store by myself (in a town of 1500) until I was well past the age, where all my friends were doing those things themselves (8 or 9), but at the same time, when we were home I was free to wonder all over the farm, down the road, in and up the trees or where ever. If we fell and got hurt, we got a bandaid, a kiss and sent on our way.

Warren has been pretty much raised the same way. No corner protectors, no sterile home, no freaking out if got his feet dirty. Despite his temper issues, he is one of the healthiest and most responsible 12.9 year olds I know.

There is such a thing as time to let go. A kid who has never seen a germ is going to have an immune system that runs in the other direction when he finally faces one.

Gahh!! I really don't understand some people.

Like why I'm being kicked off, when they library closes in 5 minutes.
gotta good

Mini-Bio

In every neighborhood there is at least one house that all the neighbors gossip about. This is a diary from the woman who lives in that house. I am a single mother in her mid thirties. I live in North Dakota with my son, Warren.

I tend to be a bit of a slob, and am the opposite of a girly-girl. I am geek girl, who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Buffy, Angel, action movies, science fiction, action adventure, Dr. Who, and so on and so on.

I love to write and while I don't post much fiction online anymore I would love to be a writer someday. I am also overweight, bipolar and suffer from allergy induced asthma.
