I thought you'd all like a small history lesson and a bit of my geneolgy for some fun today.

My Dad's parents were Scandanavian (or as Lena and most in these parts would say, Scandahoovians). My grandmothers parents came from Norway and my Grandfather came over from Sweden as a very young man (think around 21 or so). Pretty typical immigration story, been told millions of times.

My mother's parents however were German. But Germany was not what they considered the "Old Country". Russia was the "Old Country" and while they spoke German it was a German Russian dialect.

My Grandparents grew up in Odessa Russia, in one of the many villiages in the area.

They were what is known in these parts as Germans from Russia.

My maternal ancestors originally came from the Black Forest area of Germany however during the late 18th century in to the middle of the 19th century, many were lured to Russia with the promise of Free land for them to farm. There were other promises as well, such as freedom from the Russian army.

Unfortunately starting with Alexander II, things changed and suddenly Germans were like 2nd class citizen with fewer and fewer rights and more and more rules they didn't have to follow before.

As a result my grandparents (who were kids) and many other Germans from Russia, basically "smuggled themselves" (my grandparents terminolgoy) out of Russia.

German was the language my grandparents spoke, English was only for non Germans and to the kids, unless they didnt' want them to know what they were talking about.

So many of the names were from books, Many were bibilical as they were very catholic. Which explains alot.

Time out, more tommorrow.

Mini-Bio

In every neighborhood there is at least one house that all the neighbors gossip about. This is a diary from the woman who lives in that house. I am a single mother in her mid thirties. I live in North Dakota with my son, Warren.

I tend to be a bit of a slob, and am the opposite of a girly-girl. I am geek girl, who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Buffy, Angel, action movies, science fiction, action adventure, Dr. Who, and so on and so on.

I love to write and while I don't post much fiction online anymore I would love to be a writer someday. I am also overweight, bipolar and suffer from allergy induced asthma.
